There’s hardly a lady without a bra that it seems like bras have been around forever. From mass produced to designer brands, bras of different colours and sizes are all over the place, we never really bother to wonder about how they came to be.
Well, for anyone who is interested, here 10 random and interesting facts about bras:

1. The Victoria’s Secret Red Hot Fantasy Bra is the most expensive bra in the world; it’s valued at $15 million. It holds the Guinness World record for the most expensive lingerie and it was made with over 1,300 gemstones including Thai rubies laid over red satin. It was modelled by super model Giselle Bündchen in 2000.

2. The average bra size is now a 36DD which indicates that the average breast size of women have increased.

3. British women have the largest breasts; this is according to some studies which claim that about 50% of them wear at least a D cup.

4. A backless bra was created in 1914 by New York Socialite, Mary Phelps. She used two handkerchiefs and a pink ribbon to create her design which she later sold to the Warner Brother’s Corset Company.

5. The term “brassiere” was first used in 1907: it appeared in print in Vogue magazine.

6. Crete is credited with the first bra and the first corset in history.

7. In 2014, about $16 billion was spent on bras worldwide.

8. Frederick of “Frederick’s of Hollywood” is reputed to have invented the first padded bra in 1947 and the first push-up bra in 1948. He is also credited with inventing the first front hook bra and the thong.


9. Greek women are recorded to have worn corsets and bras that supported and yet exposed their breasts.  

10. Bras need to be washed at least once a week.
