Youthfulness is usually associated with playfulness, enthusiasm, being child-like, energetic, innocent, and hopeful.
These qualities are highly desirable by most people so here are 7 things you can start doing today to have a more youthful lifestyle!
1. Play more.
To be more youthful you need to play like you were still in your youth. Playing is just letting yourself behave like no one is watching or judging you.
Remember when you were a kid, did you really care if you got mud all over your clothes or if your hair got messed up? Be that way again.
I dare you to drop on the floor and make snow or carpet angels with a big Chester-cat like grin on your face! Or roll around wrestling with your kids, partner, or pet.
Make a habit of playing a little each day and watch your life transform into something resembling
2. Use your imagination!
Whether it’s to daydream, visualize an upcoming vacation, or reading a fiction novel—do something where you have to use your imagination.
“Imagination is everything. It is the preview of life’s coming attractions.” – Albert Einstein
When was the last time you used your imagination? Do you remember when you were a kid how your imagination brought you to different worlds? Go there again!
When you use your imagination you become hopeful.
Hopefulness is a key element to youthfulness. When you flex this creative skill, you become more daring and begin to entertain thoughts of what if? Kids aren’t the only one with their whole life before them—so do you have much to do and experience. Imagine the possibilities that still await you!
3. Be spontaneous!
As adults, our lives have become an assembly line of sorts. We wake-up, get dressed, eat, drive, work, eat, drive, watch TV, sleep, and repeat. Somewhere in there you fed other people, clothed them, and talked to a few who also had a very similar day.
How about if once in a while you just did something out of the ordinary?
It doesn’t have to be that crazy. Start small so you don’t shock yourself with your impulsive behavior. Find that incorporating a little spontaneity in your life will boost your youthful energy.
4. Go ahead laugh until your belly aches, then just a little bit more.
Nothing says young and care-free like laughing out loud and perhaps—until it hurts. This type of laughter—where you’re doubling over—is a sign of letting go, of not caring how you look, and a total giving into the moment. Something most of us experienced as kids.
When was your last good laugh?
The last time for me was Valentines day. My boyfriend and I went to the Punch Line comedy club in San Francisco and we laughed till our sides hurt. It was an awesome lineup and a great way to spend the evening.
Laughing in the comfort of your own home is just as excellent because you can laugh as loud as you want. Put on a movie like Bridesmaids and get your youthful spirit giggle on!
5. Find things to be in awe of.
Have you ever watched a kid just be entertained by bubbles? They could just watch that bubble machine all day long and be totally impressed and happy.
As adults, we’ve become a little too spoiled and smart. We don’t find too many things that cause us to wonder, be inexplicably elated, or awestruck.
To nurture our youthful innocence, we need to be fascinated more often.
Here is a small list of what has captivated my attention and feeding my youthful sensibilities:
- Olympics, especially ice-skaters and snow boarders – the speed, the skill!
- Cirque Du Soleil, the acrobats that fly and the women that twist like pretzels- amazeballs!
- Mermaid, The Body Found (YouTube it now!)
- Ancient Aliens (If no ones knows for certain, I’m not going to rule out the possibility.)
- Instagram yogis, I can watch people doing crazy arm balances for a good fifteen minutes, or longer.
What inspires awe in you?
6. Unleash your inner artist!
Make something with your hands. Whether it’s a new recipe or folding an origami stork, do something creative.
“There is a fountain of youth: it is your mind, your talents, the creativity you bring to your life and the lives of people you love. When you learn to tap this source, you will truly have defeated age.” – Sophia Loren
Being an artist or creative doesn’t call for perfection, it only calls for participation.
You are creative and artistic in your own right. When you indulge in your natural talents—build things with your hands and from your heart—the more you begin to live an ageless existence.
7. Keep dreaming.
“You are never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream.” C.S. Lewis
This is a true statement for everyone.
At any moment, you can change your thoughts, mood, and the direction with which your life is going.
No matter how old you are, if you want to stay enthusiastic, hopeful, and youthful—don’t stop dreaming. Let your dreams and goals propel you to living your best life.
