"Guard your heart above all, for it determines the course of your life."-Prov 4:23(NLT)
Every result we get in life either success or failure is a product of thought, but a lot of people have not come to terms with this reality, they still blame God, devil, or their family background as the reason for their undesirable life outcomes, not knowing that they are responsible for their outcomes.
The foundation of every creation process is thought. If anything
exists today, it is because someone thought about it. If there is anything you
have right now, it is either you thought about it and got it, or someone
thought about it and got it for you. The physical eyes is useless in the
creation process, though it can serve as a tool for obtaining information from
the external environment, it is what an individual sees with his mind, and which he
later create through action that the eyes can see and interact with.
The popular maxim says, “sow
a thought, reap an action, sow an action reap a habit, so a habit reap a
character, and sow a character, reap a destiny.” The creation processes
proceed from thought to action, from action to results or outcomes. “The way you think,” said harry Lorayne,
“is the way you live.” I add, the way
you live determines the outcome you get. So in the long run, it is your thought
that shapes your life.
It has been said that thousands of
thoughts or ideas run through
the mind of the average human being everyday but most of them are
negative.
This calls for the reason why we need to be selective of what we think
about. Though for a starter it may be difficult, but with
practice you can come to the level where you can choose the thought you
think, even when you are constantly bombarded by negative thoughts.
To become who we want to be, it is essential that we develop the
ability to select the thought we want to accommodate. The ability to choose the
thought we think is one of the greatest power given to us by God via which we
can create our destinies. Charles Darwin once said that “the highest possible stage in moral culture is when we recognized that
we ought to control our thoughts.” If you must say like Henley that “I am
the master of my fate, I am the captain of my soul,” you must learn to take
charge of the thoughts you think, the images you visualize and the actions you
take.
3
Simple Steps to Taking Charge of Your Thoughts
1. Identify your thoughts and
emotions by their name: One of the reasons why people find
it difficult to rise above negative thoughts and emotions is because they find
it difficult to name their thoughts and emotions. Knowing you are not in a good
mood is not enough. The ability to control your thoughts and emotions begins
with knowing the names of all the thoughts that pass through your mind. Thoughts
are often expressed in emotion such as anger, self pity, frustration,
depression, fear, self-doubt, unbelief, guilt, feeling of helplessness, and
hopelessness, compassion, love, hatred, dissatisfaction and so on. As soon as
you are able to identify your thoughts and emotions by name, it would become easy for you
to identify their source, and by so doing you would be able to resolve the
conflict that is going on in your mind.
2. Know the consequence of your
thoughts: I wrote earlier that thoughts
manifest inform of emotions, it is these emotions that influence our actions
and consequently create our destinies. Every emotion carries along with it
certain consequence which may be positive or negative. It depends on the
emotion or thought. James Allen, the author of ''as a man thinketh’’ said ''lust, hatred, anger, vanity, pride,
covetousness, self indulgence, self seeking, obstinacy, all these are poverty
and weakness, whereas love, purity, gentleness, meekness, patience, compassion,
generosity, self forgetfulness, self renunciation, all these are wealth and
power.'' Knowing the consequence of your thoughts will motivate you to
shift your mind from destructive thoughts to thoughts that can serve you
positively.
3. Control your thoughts: Having known that your thought
determines your destiny, then it is imperative that you control your thoughts.
Wallace Wattle noted in his book, the
science of getting rich that “there
is no labour from which most people shrink as they do from that of sustained
and consecutive thought.” To think
positive thought consistently will definitely not be easy, but you must force
mind to do it. Your thoughts are powerful; they are the creator of goods and
ills, wealth and poverty, happiness and sadness.
To succeed in life, you must learn to
organize your thoughts and allow the beneficial ones to rule your heart.
Napoleon hill said, “Cherish your vision
and your dreams (thoughts) as they are the children of your own soul and the
blueprints of your ultimate achievements.”
