Starting The Exam
- Makes sure you are in the right exam. There may be other testing session for the same class and classes with similar names. Look for others from your section and double check the section number.
- Remember that every instructor has different requirements and will expect different things. Read instructions for each exam so that you are sure to provide accurate answers.
- Determine which questions you will answer and which order you will answer them in. This may vary depending on the type of exam. Prepare for this by reading the section on Different Types of Exams.
- Make a plan for each question that will require any writing or chart usage. This will shorten the time it takes you to complete the question. It will also prevent you from making mistakes.
- Do not rush to write. This will cause mistakes. Read your plan and revise it if you find anything has been left out. Do not include irrelevant information.
- Make sure you follow the instructions. You may find some terms used in the instructions confusing so learn these ahead of time. To do this, refer to the Glossary of Exam Terms.
- Know how much time you have for each question and include time limits in your planning process. For example if you know that you will have 3 hours to answer 10 essay questions, then you have 18 minutes per question. That breaks down to 9 minutes for planning and 9 minutes for writing. Keep you eye on the clock because if you go over your per question time limit you may lose points on other questions.
- Attempt to answer all necessary questions. Even a brief statement is worth more points than no answer.
Always leave time at the end of the exam to check your answers. You may find you have made mistakes or left out information. By correcting this you will earn more points. Continue this process until you have used all available time. Do not leave early, once you have left the exam you will not be able to correct any of your mistakes. Use your time well and you will be faced with less regrets after the test.
